DAY 5: FIRST THINGS FIRST

RAINBOW DICE - 1, 2, 3

These days I find myself easily distracted.

Please tell me I’m not the only one.

I start the day with ninja-like determination to “kill” my top three to-do’s by dinner or perish in the attempt. Yet by mid-morning I find myself knee-deep in planning meals or alphabetizing recipe cards when suddenly I realize: That’s not on my list…AND I don’t cook!

SQUIRREL!

So I redouble my efforts and head back to the writing desk.

A couple minutes later I discover I need to research “a little something” before getting started. Before I know it I’ve bought three bottles of vitamins, two cell phone cases, and struck up a conversation with Raul from India on a customer service chatline.

SQUIRREL!

SECOND THINGS FIRST

Most of the tasks I end up doing instead of my to-do list aren’t completely useless. They’re just not my TOP priority. They’re usually second or third. These kinds of tasks tend to FEEL more urgent, yet upon reflection I often find that they really could’ve waited.

Sigh.

Which is not the end of the world, except that doing SECOND things first leaves FIRST THINGS undone – and often leaves me playing catch-up for the rest of the week.

Sound familiar?

Today I got a lot of good stuff done…yet I know it wasn’t the stuff at the TOP of the list.

How about you – how did your day go?

Before we start beating ourselves up for how royally we’ve messed up, let’s at least get this much right…

  • Let’s pause and soak in a little mercy

  • Let’s drink in a little forgiveness

  • Let’s receive grace to help in time of need

  • And for this moment at least, let’s go ahead and put FIRST things first:  His Presence here with us…in the midst of it all

Aaaaaaaaaaaah…I’m starting to feel better already…

Who knows, maybe that was the “first things first” He had in mind all along?
